One of the best challenges in Storytelling is making the complex, simple enough to understand. There are so many processes around us that make total sense to those who understand, yet mystify those who don't.
How do you create a story to explain a process that you have no expertise in? Listening.
Oh, and asking a LOT of questions.
Knowing nothing or very little about a subject is an advantage for me as a storyteller. I have no preconceived notions about what the story should be or how the information should be presented.
As a storyteller, I HAVE to ask a lot of questions. I have to learn, comprehend, ask more question and then determine how to present what I have learned to the audience in a simple, yet entertaining way. Learning new things from the mundane to super geeky science is a true joy in what I get to do.
It's even more fun when the work is in a language I don't speak.
